Pennsylvania Tenth Amendment Center legal analyst Benjamin Gross was just blocks away when the first bomb detonated at the Boston Marathon finish line, giving him a unique perspective on that day and its aftermath.
About an hour before two explosions ripped through the heart of the city, Gross finished his fourth Boston Marathon
“I was fatigued, but enjoying the table fellowship of my fellow runners, telling stories, drinking Guinness and thinking all was right in the world.”
The beauty of the moment was shattered in an instant. But Gross says he fears the tragedy in Boston will perpetrate another tragedy: a mortal wounding of the Constitution. Gross said he lived the horror of that afternoon in Boston, and then watched in horror as the city became a militarized zone just a few days later.
“The media gave us a morbidly fascinating window to the action, a real life Running Man, where the bad guys were pursued in house-to-house searches with military precision courtesy of the billions in tax dollars that perfected the security-surveillance state we call America. Michel Foucalt was presciently right; we are living in a Panopticon,” he said.
Gross said he was glad to see the suspects arrested and hopes that justice will prevail, but he fears that the cost could prove higher than most realize.
“I believe in justice served and do not lament the ultimate fates of the men who terrorized the 117th Boston Marathon. But a Constitution that is so easily torn asunder in moments of popular angst will be impotent in protecting the liberty that very long ago made it and our nation unique.”
