First, if the government had not used social security funds for other purposes, there would be a lack of funds. The pursuit of happiness does not infer property ownership, or ones right to become wealthy, it is a only a reference to what makes one happy. Good for you, you are a smart human being, you saved money and can take care of yourself, but what percentage of Americans do you fall in with? The fore fathers also knew that in time things would change and the need for redefining the amendments would occur. I really wish you could quit infering that happiness is another word for property. If that is what they would have wanted to say, they would have. Most importantly, our fore fathers realized that life would not always be so simple, they knew that the Constitution was a framework for democracy, it was not democracy itself. They were well aware that the wealthy in America would run hopelessly amuck if they did not agree on a Constitution. The Constitution has kept our country in check, thus far. If there is a reason to debate retirement benefits, then I suggest we remove the retirement entitlement to all elected officals, as, these are people that little need assistance in old age.

The American people have worked and paid their way to a retirement that most companies do not help with nor can poor people put money away for a retirement. Why doesn't the gov pay ss back what they have supposedly borrowed from ss to help keep OUR retirement income secure!? Something Gov employees will never have to worry about. Their retirement benefits are served on a GOLD platter. Leave your greedy paws off of OUR SS benefits, It's not much but is all we have to look forward to in our older age.

The idea that the original concept of "pursuit of happiness" was merely "the pursuit of avarice and wealth" is basically satanic, and would have mortified the Framers. The idea of "Happiness" in that era was grounded in Judea-Christian asceticism - as in the joy of overcoming base mortal desires to become more nearly in the image of the Creator and a vessel of the Creator's will. This was, let it be noted, the foundation of the beginnings of Western science - that the Creation was lawful and rational in its origin, and that mortals, being made in the image of the Creator, could understand and use the lawfulness and rationality of Creation to further the Good. See, for example, St. Augustine's The City of God, or the Leibniz-Clarke correspondence of the late 1600s.

If the "pursuit of property" is what you think is a great "right" then you are a hideously deformed creature, far from the image of the Creator.

Since I've paid social security taxes my entire working life, I suspect I deserve to collect it when I can no longer work. If you have a problem with that, tough!
