Ron Paul: States Have Right to Legalize Marijuana

In a recent interview on Air America Radio, Ron Paul took a strong stand in support of the Constitution and State Sovereignty – by stating that laws and regulations of Marijuana should be on a state level.

“If California wants to legalize it, let ‘em legalize it,” Paul told host Richard Greene on Air America’s “Hollywood CLOUT!” program.

He said that he believes that the U.S. Constitution gives the fifty states the right to legalize hemp production or marijuana. He said the issue was a matter of personal liberty but added that drug users should not be entitled to government-funded treatment if they abuse legalized drugs.

“If drugs are legal and people misuse them, then they do it at their own risk,” he said.

Bottom line, said Paul: “I do trust individuals to make their own decisions.”

It may be the state's right to legalize it, but the federal government can reserve the right to withhold various sorts of subsidies, block grants, matching funds, etc., from states that do. For example, there is nothing to say that California cannot legalize hemp, but there's nothing to say that the feds can't withhold highway funding because of it.

I say the feds legalize it at that level & tax the sh*t out of it! It could be the salvation of Big Tobacco Companies!

BK Campbell, FYI.

FACT. The Diesel motor was invented/designed to run on hemp oil. It had to be modified to run on petroleum.

FACT. The word "marijuana" was invented by the Hurst publishing empire which held the patent for wood pulp, hemp's competition.

FACT. The Big Pharma corporations financed the campaign to criminalize the herb, because the plant medicines from hemp, can not be patented. No patent, no mega profit.

Look up ""DCA & Cancer". DCA can not be patented. Ask yourself why it still can be purchased anywhere in the World, "except" America since 2007.

I believe if you investigate you will find the big oil companies lobby to keep MJ illegal more than any "moral" group. Hemp is a renewable resource and hemp seeds produce an oil that is far better than crude oil. Of course it would take thousands of acres to produce enough oil to make a difference but just look at all the space we have going to waste or the Govt. is paying people NOT to grow crops on. Plus methane gas would be easy to produce from the plant as well. So here is that energy source we have been searching for.

They need to leaglize this and end this phony war on drugs - WE The People are tired of a select few prudes legislating their version of morality on us. Prohibition does not work - didnt we already learn that lesson?

As long as you start from the understanding that 80 is the new 60, Ron Paul will be our man in 2012, & Rand Paul will make a excellent wing man after 2010.

These Dr.'s have the cure !

I don't know how old Dr. Paul is but he looks to be pretty healthy and I sincerely hope he stays that way. I have never contributed to a politcan before but if he runs in 2012 I will and he's sure got my vote. I would say the biggest challenge all the tenth amenders face is convincing religious conservatives to let their personal beliefs be just that...personal and let the Govt. be a Constitutional Govt. God gave us free will and as long as our rights do not infringe on anothers rights, Govt. should do the same. Its the Constitution. Liberals should be leading the way in the Tenth Amendment and indeed Ca. and NH were the first to pass Tenth Amendment legislation back in the mid-90's. But it obviously does not have the teeth it should or the Fed. Govt. would not still be prosecuting medicinal pot users. With 30 states and counting, I believe we are headed in the right direction to regain states rights.

thanks for posting the interview. we need more like Rep Paul in government to shrink it and end the institutionalized law breaking: torture, murder, war, wire tapping, etc.

What about alcohol? What about tobacco? These are also legal. The only treatment available for most is incarcination. Especially repeat offenders. Then you're in the corporate jail/probation/tether system. ie this is not the care/cure for alcoholism, or any other type of substance abuse for that matter. Wake up people. The biggest thing missing from this equation::compassion.

1st let me say im 18 turning 19 in aug. i know im young but not naive..i will never ever support any one person telling the next person how to live their life IF they are not hurting anyone else in the process..i believe in order there has to be order! therefore basic laws such as dont kill someone, dont rape people, dont steal from people and dont beat up someone unless in selfdefense. if a consentual adult wants to give up their body for money thats fine, if u want 2 smoke a bowl, joint, blunt what have you. u should, i dont believe in harder drugs but again your body your choice. i dont believe in alcohol because i have been exposed to the dangers of it all my life, all my family previous to me and all my cousins over 13 drink! its a horrible drug and personally id rather it be illegal along with cancer sticks which ive seen take out several of my family members and will probably end up losing my mom in the near future from them. i smoked cigs 4 over a year 1/2 and just quit last month and its been the hardest thing ive ever had 2 do! ive smoked weed for 5yrs and ive had 2 quit and it was stressful the 1st week but i got over it..i ended up burning again cuz i had a bad day and it was there and the rest is history..wow sorry im rambling im blazed right now so im very expressive! lol i love this plant..btw for any christians reading this thinking hes just a pothead ive been a devout christian since i was a baby and it clearly says in genesis 1:29"And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat."
peace!

Did we really think that the current Republicrat would be much different from the last? I'm not at all surprised that Obama's administration is making the same mistakes as Bush's. Ron Paul is a real person with integrity, honesty, and brains... but we missed our chance to elect someone like that. Who knows when the next politician like him will come along?

Ron Paul should be our president right now, It makes me sick to think about what a missed opportunity that was. Instead we have a lying, backstabbing, laugh in your face, puppet for a president... "much respect to Ron Paul"

Liberty, Peace, self sufficiency, & a good neighbor trading policy, Ron Paul stands for all of these things, & that is why I have been calling myself a Ron Paul Canadian for quite some time now.

Mr. Ron Paul can see the genuine value in hemp for all it's industrial uses, & he will tell you that the wood pulp & petroleum industry lobby has conspired against this plant through out the entire 20th century.

Dr. Ron Paul can appreciate the medicinal values in Medical Marijuana, & he will tell you that the pharmaceutical corporations & organized crime lobbyists have conspired to demonize a useful herb.

Congressman Ron Paul Knows that the Federal Reserve is "privately" owned by a conglomerate of "privately" owned banks, & that the exact membership of this conglomerate is kept "secret" from the public. He would also tell you that since December 23, 1913, the Federal Reserve has been understood to be controlled by the Rothschild family, this is still true today.

Ron Paul will tell you that there is more debt than value in every dollar in your pocket, & that every one of those dollars in your pocket are legal notes that are owned not by you, or your country. They belong to the secret group of Banksters that are the true & legal owners of the Federal Reserve.

I am expecting Ron Paul to explain to the American people that the only reason they do not know this to be true, is that the secret owners of the Federal Reserve also control the MSM (Main Stream Media) corporate monopoly system.

I will not be disappointed, "The Truth is (getting) out there."

Ron Paul is brave enough to tell the public the truth,
& he has my RESPECT.

The ideas Ron Paul presents are found rarely in North American culture. His idea of liberty is an old one but also seems to be forgotten by the leaders of today.
It to me seems we have been duped into giving up our freedoms for security.

We are being protected from ourselves by a supposed superior moral authority , who's judgment is based upon an archaic monotheistic religion. If I want to smoke pot it should be my choice if I want to harvest a textile from a harmless plant I should also be able to make my own decision to do so.

If we didn't have the Federal Reserve system States would receive their money through taxation for use of the societal needs. Hence States would fare better than waiting for the Fed to dole out state money.

and on Canadian Health care its not perfect but i get free artificial legs until i am 65, I have been receiving them since i was two years old and I am now 31. i cant even count all the legs Ive gone through, being able to participate in life. I play hockey, on a regular basis with all able bodied players, because there wasn't a problem getting me cared for I am able to succeed.

It is legal for the State to do so.
If you disagree or agree it is still the States power to do so.
If you don't like it change it in congress.

As for Ron Paul...you yanks should have elected him when you had a chance...it's too bad that most people are only beginning to see that now. If we had someone like him in Canada, I sincerely hope that we'd have sense enough to put him in a position to help the people, instead of government and big business...but it's iffy.

The most important thing that you can do is to look into EVERYTHING. Don't take ANYONE'S word for ANYTHING without first looking into what they've said, and determining for yourself whether what they have said is true or not. Only then can you come to an informed decision.

This is the main reason that the mainstream media doesn't tell you the whole story, just their biased "applicable segment(s) of the truth" that suit their aims. Without a full picture of what's really going on, they know that they can lead you in your ignorance to the conclusion they have preordained.

Will you continue to be led, or will you seek the whole truth for yourself, and made your mind up based on all of the facts for a change?

I used to vote for Democrats all my life until I heard Ron Paul speak during the 2008 presidential debates.

He opened up my eyes to the reality of how all government intervention has negative unintended consequences.

I am now convinced that we would be much better off with a limited and Constitutional form of government.

Freedom definitely brings people together!

Terry- Dr Paul would prefer that we pretty much stay home and tend our knitting here rather than messing around abroad. I have never ever seen him say anything about support for UHC. I don't expect I ever will either.

Most Libertarians will tell you that Homeland Security consists of armed citizens, not government "gimmes".

BTW.. Whya have so many Canadians been coming down here for healthcare the last 10 years or so??? UHC only works on small populations.

Terry Conspiracy

You would call it Homeland Security if you took into account the role of food, shelter, health care, & education play in a a stable & Just society.

Ron Paul would tell you that you could afford proper universal health care if you stop investing in weapons of mass destruction.

Universal health care has been a treasured & affordable part of Canadian life for decades neighbor, think about it.

Terry,

Therefore...please stay in Canada. Charity is the only response to the "social safety net". Maybe it can be a govt sponsored charity, but no one must be coerced into participating. Otherwise, it's called socialism.

Terry Conspiracy

Ron Paul is so incredibly consistent in fallowing his constitutional compass, that he will always have my respect.

The #1 concern I have with Dr. Paul, is that he never talks about the need or the value of a National social safety net in America. I have been paying attention for a while now, & he has been quite silent about this topic.

He seems to think that "social safety net" & "educational" issues, are State & Publicly Supported Charity responsibilities. His economic model/vision claims that these organs would be healthier, & more capable of meeting the public needs, with him in charge, & he may be right.

As a Canadian, I feel that our model seems to be working quite well. Our citizens regardless of where they live in the country can be guaranteed minimum standards for these basic human rights, that represent so much of what "is", the quality of our lives.

Having said that, I say that Congressman Ron Paul is a truly great man,
& he has my heart felt RESPECT & admiration.

Ron Paul is the real deal. It is long past time to decriminalize Marijuana. Prohibition only makes it profitable for criminals and more dangerous for citizens. Didn't work with alcohol, will not work with marijuana.

Californians have an historic opportunity to legalize marijuana for adults recreational use. Assemblymember Tom Ammiano introduced in February California Assembly Bill 390, which would do just that.

If you live in California and favor legalizing marijuana, YOU can make it happen. Tell your representatives to support California Assembly Bill 390. It's easy. Visit yes390.org

The bottom line: the federal government does not have the right to legislate morality. If I want to eat a four-pound bag of sugar every single day, it'll likely result in diabetes and myriad health problems. But I have the right to do so. If some college student has unprotected sex every night of the week and twice on Sundays, it's risky but not illegal.
I can have an abortion then get hammered on tequila afterwards, but I cannot ingest a non-fatal plant after work to relax in the privacy of my own home.
This makes no sense and reduces me - a law-abiding, taxpaying, hard-working, registered voter over 21 - to a citizen whose government assumes I'm too stupid to make my own choices. All the while, they advertise Abilify, Zoloft, Prilosec, Viagra... while some soft-spoken ghoul lays out the laundry list of potential side effects.

BK Campbell

Excellent interview Dr. Paul. Personal liberty and responsibility for our own decisions seems scary to people for some reason. Yet the number of arrest for MJ use shows that people pretty much ignore the law. The govt. war on drugs has been such a failure yet they keep funding it year after year with increasing more money. One of the biggest reasons we have such a problem with the harder drugs like cocaine is the fact that smugglers have discovered that can make much more money with a much smaller package. I believe the laws have changed somewhat in this regard in recent years and now there is more punishment for the harder drugs, when the war first began the punishmment was the same. Now there is a big demand for the harder drugs and probably most of the pot around these days is domestic. But Dr. Paul is correct and this "war" has been unconstitutional from the beginning and this should be our main concern.
