Both want to impose their preferred social agendas on the population at the point of the government gun. Neither recognizes that it is not the place of government to determine issues of morality, and both believe that the government should ban or legalize this or that.

*While a compelling Constitutional case can be made for the issue of abortion being restricted or banned, it is not and shouldn't be the place of the federal government or the judiciary to decide it. That is a difficult matter for the people of the several States to decide.

Therefore, when they are leaned on by the party elites they will capitulate and become part of the problem. If they do know and understand the constitution, they have a wide basis to help keep them standing tall when being pressed by the elites.

Ron Paul is a good example. He votes the constitution always. It is easy for him and he can stand strong when under pressure.

I fear what will happen is the republican party will become the tea party with no changes to the tyranny.
