Yes, people on the left literally view government this way. They don't come out and admit it but think about the things they say like demanding that government cares or describing people as childish for demanding their rights. Its just so ingrained into their thinking that they can't think of anything else anymore. The idea that government is not a patriarchial figure in society is foreign to them. There are ways we can fight this and pushing localism, states as sovriegn entities, and the tenth amendment is a good method because 'big daddy' can't reach into another state, city, or local.

I think everyone needs to be reminded of something Martin Luther King, Jr. said:

"If you have never found something so dear and so precious to you that you will die for it, then you aren’t fit to live. You may be thirty-eight years old, as I happen to be, and one day, some great opportunity stands before you and calls upon you to stand up for some great principle, some great issue, some great cause. And you refuse to do it because you are afraid. You refuse to do it because you want to live longer. You’re afraid that you will lose your job, or you are afraid that you will be criticized or that you will lose your popularity, or you’re afraid that somebody will stab you or shoot at you or bomb your house. So you refuse to take the stand. Well, you may go on and live until you are ninety, but you are just as dead at thirtyeight as you would be at ninety. And the cessation of breathing in your life is but the belated announcement of an earlier death of the spirit. You died when you refused to stand up for right. You died when you refused to stand up for truth. You died when you refused to stand up for justice."

Are we dead yet?

I kind of agree with you......Americans do want freedom, but they have gotten so complacent that they just want it given to them & don't want to fight for it. In all power struggles, no power is just given up without a fight when it comes to tyranny.

You might want to read that book out where a small town in America does stand up to federal tyranny & ends up starting the 2nd American Revolution. Hey, the same causes are there now (high taxes, foreign wars, King George III & intrusion of govt. into out lives). It's a must read about true Americans standing up for their freedoms. I recommend it. www.booksbyoliver.com

The idea of a government that 'cares' really comes from the progressives. I've been reading a good book about them and in it they described society as a large family where the state is the father figure. In this view of society family members don't have individual rights simply because big daddy determines the rights of everyone just like when we were kids we had to keep asking our parents if we could go out and play. Now we ask the government if we can do the most basic things just like children having to ask their parents if they can go out and play.

I've come to the very cynical conclusion that human beings really don't want to live in freedom. Societies have became instruments of control for us instead of instruments of free-trade and capitalism (which is what they should be). Think of all the laws people want to pass and ask yourself why would they want to pass a law restricting the behavior of others?
