I ain't so sure about that, but maybe the "right" could then see it. Maybe. By the "right" I mean, you know, those guys and gals up there on Capitol Hill who don't really oppose 'Obamacare' and the like per se, they just don't like the left's balls-to-the-wall, no-holds-barred approach to it all. That is, some of them don't. Guys like Joe Wilson for instance. Turns out that before he was agin it, Kerry-like Joe Wilson was for free medical care for illegal aliens. Of course that was under president Bush's lesser-than plan.

Indeed, the nature of man is such that absolute power corrupts absolutely. This is why the original vision of this republic provided for a balance of power, with the several states as sovereign in order to check an out of control Federal government. Centralized power will always lead to tyranny, as has been seen countless times throughout recorded history. If only the veil of compassion was removed from the centralization scheme, the left would surely see the true nature of it.

Not saying that I'd be in favor of such a grand jury plan, but I wouldn't be too upset by a paralyzed federal government! Our liberty would be far safer if it were.

What? Throw the balance of power out? Surely we see the real culprit is the nature of men. The justices with their own chips on their shoulders were let go as their acts opened up avenues of power to each of the branches and over time they all have wallowed in their ever growing authorities.

What ought to be done is a trigger set where if several states defy the powers asserted by any branch of the national government that it should bring about a super grand jury of the people who should then assess the constitutionality of the powers or acts so repugnant or even so favored as to require an amendment or nullification. In this way we the people should never suffer long the devices of calculating or ignorant powers. This was discussed by the founders yet was left out of the plan because they could not truly give credence to such a scenario given all the protections built into the system. Also they felt that to often a interference would paralyze the government and to lengthy would be of no use yet would tie the peoples hands. Now that we know it is necessary to set a correction upon the government, it wouldn't be a burden if the branches knew they would be quickly checked should they devise a plan or play silent endorser to aggrandize any of their powers. Indeed it has taken a century of foolhardy decisions by the courts, many precedents of power uses by the executive and many crises to bring us to this point we are at. Considering how far we have wandered it ought not be a concern we over indulge the peoples powers but by the same observation of drift, the damage done is completely unwarranted even as a failed experiment.

Bob, you might be right! If they actually gave the president the title it deserves rather than covering it in the cloak of legitimacy, more people would recognize the source of our problems.

In his 1913 book, "The Framing of The Constitution of the United States," Max Farrand wrote:

"[A]fter the new government was installed, the title which (George) Washington himself was said to have preferred as the most fitting one for his position was ‘His High Mightiness, the President of the United States and the Protector of their Liberties.’"

(Max Farrand, The Framing of the Constitution of the United States, (New Haven, Yale University Press, 1913) p. 163.)

Too bad Washington's version was not adopted...maybe it would have helped to answer some of these questions surrounding the office of the President before they escalated into problems.
