Federal vs State government

by Josh Eboch

After decades of broken promises, many Americans have realized that whichever party is in office, the more power held by federal officials, the less control the people have over their own lives, and the more arrogant and dangerous those far off federal officials will become.

The only way to keep the government accountable, to keep its size and power where they cannot be easily abused, is to keep government close to home.

Yet over the century and a half since Lincoln settled the Confederacy question, an ongoing and unrestrained power grab by the federal government has led to the assumption that its mandate is unlimited. State obsequiousness to central authority in exchange for federal tax dollars has helped fuel that delusion, and resulted in significant loss of individual freedom over the years; but the true scope of federal arrogance has been on display only since last fall.

That was when the executive branch via President Bush began nationalizing huge swaths of private industry despite an utter lack of constitutional authority to do so.

But even though more resources and power than ever are flowing into Washington, D.C., one day students of our history may look back on the early part of the Obama administration and see not a new authoritarian foundation, but rather the pinnacle of an unsustainably centralized power structure. Already, public attitudes toward the new president are shifting from cautious optimism about his professed faith in the American dream to incredulous horror at his continued and worsening abuse of federal power.

That’s because, contrary to popular belief, the American people are not fools. They love liberty and can clearly see the dead hand of government as it grasps further than ever into their lives and wallets. The last six months have exposed a vacuum in the political marketplace and rancorous town hall meetings over health care “reform” are just the beginning.

While members of Congress tell themselves that opposition to their statist agenda is motivated by ignorance or special interest cash, it is actually America’s Anti-Federalist heritage re-emerging in front of their eyes. Millions of Americans have grown so disillusioned by the tyrannical similarities between Republicans and Democrats in Congress (and in the presidency) that they are now raising serious questions about the fundamental virtues of federal versus state power.

And while proponents of state sovereignty may not be able to stop a president and his supermajority on health care or cap and trade, their movement is preparing for the start of a major upheaval in 2010.

And what’s coming won’t be your daddy’s Revolution.

Even now, the rumblings have begun. Look no further than the stands taken this past spring by Rick Perry in Texas and Mark Sanford in South Carolina over taxes and unfunded mandates tied to federal stimulus money. Or the sovereignty resolutions that have now passed in many states. These are not isolated coincidences.

During next year’s elections (and beyond) many candidates will argue that the time has come to stop subverting state interests to self-serving diktats of the federal government, or risk losing autonomy altogether.

And some of those candidates, mostly at the state level, will win. In the process, Anti-Federalism as an issue will regain its rightful prominence in our national political dialogue. Millions of Americans who currently feel shut out, disregarded, and unrepresented in national politics will demand their state representatives stop dreaming of an office on Capitol Hill and start bringing power and control back home where it belongs.

The key to success for this new generation of Anti-Federalists will be the countless small government groups that have sprouted like weeds all over the country in the past six months.

If they turn their formidable energy and principled fiscal conservatism to state politics, the pressure on those governments to reduce tax and regulatory burdens will be enormous. The representatives will have to respond, or risk being run out of office.

Eventually, to keep their jobs, they will fight for those same demands on behalf of their constituents at the national level; defending individual freedom against a power hungry federal oligarchy, just as the Constitution intended.

I am willing to vote for any candidate that includes state sovereignty in their campaign. whether or not they are just giving lip service to it is another matter.

Any government is better than any corporation. The corporations will destroy society and it will not matter how much power government has. Thus, its better to give government power to rein in the soulless and anti-American corporations than it is to suffer at the hands of the criminals in the boardrooms.

That’s why, when a Conron says “free enterprise,” they mean, “Bend over and drop trow because you are about to get screwed royally.”

Carl – while there are plenty of corporations that we’d be better off without, you seem to be missing an essential fact.

What “destruction” can a corporation do without protection, or even funding, from government? Can they wage wars? Can they spy on you? Can they take your income and give it to someone else?

the government has become a corporation

“You and I are told we must choose between a left or right, but I suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down. Up to man’s age-old dream-the maximum of individual freedom consistent with order or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism. Regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would sacrifice freedom for security have embarked on this downward path. Plutarch warned, “The real destroyer of the liberties of the people is he who spreads among them bounties, donations and benefits.”
The Founding Fathers knew a government can’t control the economy without controlling people. And they knew when a government sets out to do that, it must use force and coercion to achieve its purpose. So we have come to a time for choosing.” – Ronald Reagan

Before I understand the meaning of the 10th Amendment, I had always understood that the Federal government should be purely limited to powers described in the U.S. Constitution. This would not only mean thinning out our Federal government to the point where it functions to protect our liberty at a national level, but would also give the states the power to establish their own government to provide for needs specific to the state (which could be for their own “social programs”, if needed). Thus Americans would have greater choice in choosing which state they would prefer to live in – if you believe in BIG government, fine but move to a state with big cities which usually require lots of government services; if you’re more independent, move to a state which doesn’t require heavy taxation for social programs.

I sure am glad that Carl defined what a “conron” is in his post because that one had me totally baffled. Did you make that one up all by your little self, Carl? Good boy!

Even lip service can lead to action, as lip service starts and sustains the conversation and chain of though among the people to start thinking of their state as more important. In that process of growing awareness of their State, the people will begin to learn how to uses them again to solve domestic government problems, instead of trying to uses the federal government for such.

We need to look at this form a long term point of view of changing the mindset of our people, because that’s where our real true long term victory will come from. Not in the institutional changes of government but in the change in the way people use government.

This of course starts with, and is entirely depended upon how they think about it. We must start them thinking for our long term goals to be viable.

    Monorprise,

I couldn’t have written it better myself. That is the ultimate turning point- when we can reverse the war on the minds of Americans and restore the decentralized vision of our founding fathers.

This is a revolution of thought.

That’s a damn worthy outlook Monorprise, and well said too.

My Dream for America – The Democratic Reform Party

The Democratic Reform Party is currently being formed under the time-honored principles set forth within the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, and the Bible.

As patriotic Americans, it is our duty to follow in the footsteps laid down by the founding fathers of America. By the grace of God, we each shoulder the responsibility to protect and preserve our great Nation. Therein, we each proudly rise up and Pledge our Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

On the other hand, many of us see our two Party system abandoning the principals as set forth by the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, and the Bible. At the very least, most of us already know the Democratic and Republican Parties no longer place much value on the “Will of the People”. Not to mention, these two political parties have recently given us Presidential advisors referred to as Czars; an ever increasing and nearly insurmountable debt; two active Wars, and they are moving more rapidly than ever into a socialist form of government.

The Democratic and Republican parties have clearly set their own agendas over the “Will of the People”. More importantly, they collaborate together for ever increasing power over the people. An example, they, by and large, pick the candidates they want us to vote for in Federal Elections as evidenced by the national debates that do not allow “third-party” candidates a voice in our election process. The two parties are one and the same, the Republican party was started 78 years after the birth of our great Nation and later split into what is now the Democratic Party. This is a power our founding fathers never condoned or wanted for themselves, our Nation, and the American people. Again by the grace of God, our founding fathers left us the means to form our own political parties to counter vent and restore our government back to the people.

As a family man, a father of two and a grandfather of two with another grandchild on the way, I must admit I’ve hardly ever voted in my life, and I never will like politics. Nevertheless, I foresee the eventual downfall of this Nation unless something is done in the very near future. The only hope is another political party built on the values and principals this great Nation was founded on. Not being overly surprised, I couldn’t find such a political party to join and give my support. This realization happened about the same time one of my daughters told me I was going to be a grandfather again, so I reluctantly decided to begin forming the Democratic Reform Party. The date was on or about August 28, 2009, and since then I’ve learned I can use all the advise and help in forming this political party into what our founding fathers would be proud of.

In short, I pray you will join in building this new political party. Together, despite the perception that Washington cannot be changed, we can restore our Nation back to a, “Government by the People, for the People”.

We need a better understanding of this at the national level. During the recent spate of town hall meetings, supporters of Obamacare compared a national health care plan to mandatory car insurance. Last time I checked, the Commonwealth of Virginia required me to have car insurance, which makes it quite a different issue that a federally mandated tax-payer funded health insurance scheme.

Here in the Old Dominion, we haven’t got a prayer of any kind of good state’s rights movement until Gov Kaine leaves office. With any luck, a more conservative Republican will follow him and we may have a shot.

JMB you said;“You and I are told we must choose between a left or right, but I suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down.”……….Well said, and now consider that little saying public property, because I’m going to liberally use it.

The ‘ Light at the end of the tunnel ‘ is the “Obama goverment” ‘ BURNING THE CONSTITUTION’.
The way I see it, Our ‘State Senators and Representatives‘ are equated in Status to ‘ Foreign Diplomats ‘. If Texas was a Separate Country and not a ‘State ‘, our ‘Diplomats’ would be ‘Posted’ in many ‘Foreign Countries’ to “Look Out For the Interests Of Texas and Our Citizens”. If the ‘Diplomats’, for what ever reason, can not or would not do there Required Functions, The ‘Diplomat’ Should Be Recalled. Possibly Re-posting a Different Diplomat. If the results do not improve, remains the same or decline / worsen, ‘Diplomatic Relations’ Should Be Suspended or Broken Off and the ‘Diplomat’ should return to Home Country ( Texas ) and advise Our President..
Yes, I know Texas ‘Ceded this Important Function’ to the U. S. Government through the Limitation of and within the “U. S. Constitution” Especial Citing the 10th. Amendment “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people”.
Now, The United States Government has Grossly Overstepped the Limitations of the “U. S. Constitution” and is behaving as a “Belligerent Foreign Nation towards and to the States”. If this ‘Ignoring’ of the “U. S. Constitution” is allowed to continue, “The United States will Fall As A Nation” and The States Will Reform into Separate Regional Nations and / or Alliances beneficial only to themselves and the need for ‘ Foreign Diplomats ‘ will surly return.

    Democratic Reform Party
Democrats seeking reform within The Democratic Party.
As Democrats of The Democratic Party, we join together in seeking reform within The Democratic Party.

Many Democrats see The Democratic Party leaders in Washington abandoning the principles and values as set forth within the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution of the United States.

At the very least, most Democrats already know The Democratic Party leaders in Washington no longer place much value in following the time-honored footsteps laid down by Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, and the founding father of The Democratic Party. For instance, The Democratic Party leaders in Washington are no longer abiding to the primary reason The Democratic Party was originally founded, for Thomas Jefferson wanted strong state governments with a weaker federal government.

This is only the beginning of our problems as Democrats, for The Democratic Party leaders in Washington have clearly set their own agendas over the members of The Democratic Party, our Nation, and the American people.

Most Democrats already know their pleas to The Democratic Party leaders in Washington are only being answered by repeated insult and injury. Despite this, we as Democrats can restore control of The Democratic Party back to the party members. All we need to do is cut off all our donations to the Nation branch of The Democratic Party, and donate the money directly to a worthy and honorable Democratic Party candidate.

So spread the message to everyone of our fellow Democrats, for we are taking back control of The Democratic Party. Also, please don’t forget to contact and request the Unions and other outside contributors to follow our lead as patriotic Americans. Thank you!
