Four years ago, these bozos tried to turn your driver’s license into just such a monstrosity with their infamous REAL ID Act. This dictate required licenses to include “defined minimum data elements,” most likely biometric identifiers such as fingerprints or retinal scans and RFID tracking chips.
Just because most Americans dont have an interest in getting a passport doesn't mean the passport doesn't have the same info as an enhanced DL.. where is the logic in your statement?

what does you having a passport, have to do with having a drivers license? separate identification, same Info. explain to me the difference in the required supporting documents to get either?? are you suggesting that the passport application does not require you to have supporting documents? ( birth Cert. State ID, ssn, etc..)

A passport holds the same info as the DL so demonizing the DL while accepting the passport is pointless.

No it isn't!

Most Americans have no interest in ever getting a passport, while almost all Americans have every interest in getting a drivers license.

I have a passport. I got it when my nephew was part of the invasionary force in Iraq. To that point I had never even considered getting a passport. But I had a drivers license.

By the way, I lied like a dog when I got out of the U.S. Air Force. You see, I carried a firearm into and out of Canada (no passport necessary because I was a military member), violating Canadian law. And, yes, I was questioned at the borders. And I lied like a dog. So sue me!

As a holder of the "enhanced" Washington state drivers license, ( only because I had no choice, it was that or be refused entry into Canada ) I can tell you the process of getting one. There is no additional info held, the emphasis was on "confirmation" of existing info that is already required, you show a certified Birth certificate, your SS card, they run you on facial recognition software, that will reveal if you have ever had a DL in any other name, you are interviewed, questions are directed as to your parents name, and your documents are gone over, with the interviewer, questioning the info.

there is an RDIF chip in my license, and the state issued a foil sleeve to keep it in so to protect the info on it, when you approach the border crossing you take the license out and place it in the open so the reader can read it... But if you bend the license enough you can break the chip, and the license becomes just another piece of ID.

In order to leave the country you must have either a passport or a drivers license that has been scrutinized. So choose your poison people,

A passport holds the same info as the DL so demonizing the DL while accepting the passport is pointless.

your only defense is to never leave the country, so one can ask themselves just how free are you if you can not leave the country without being identified?

I would've been surprised if you were. Bottom line, I see this as a state issue. As soon as you turn it into a national id program, then we'll have the feds dictating who should and shouldn't be "counted" - and that can create a whole slew of problems on all sides.
