It's difficult, b/c so many Americans don't even understand the government process, much less their Constitution. I try to explain to people that arguing over "Obama's budget" vs. "Romney's budget" is nonsensical, b/c the budget is determined by Congress; but they don't even get it. It's demoralizing when you realize how many people are ignorant, and you begin to understand why the Founders wanted to limit the vote to landowners (who would theoretically be better educated and less susceptible to politicizing).

Slightly off topic, I keep getting questions regarding the effectiveness of using the 10th Amendment. Is there somewhere on this site a list of successful uses of the 10th Amendment to nullify federal laws? I'm looking for both successful nullifications in only the individual State as well as nationwide nullification where the fed gov backed down and repealed the law.

You neglected to cover the fact that Lincoln was very conflicted (as can be seen in correspondence dating from before the war to Reconstruction) as to which side he was on personally. As he was born in Kentucky and spent most of his childhood there and JUST over the river in Indiana, he grew up in a hotbed of PRO-slavers as well as Abolitionists. His mixed feelings are evident in many of the Acts he approved, as well as his approach to the abolition of slavery. On one hand, he would refer to blacks as 'niggers' in everyday conversation. On the other; "I should like to know if taking this Declaration of Independence, which declares that all men are equal upon principle, and making exception to it- where will it stop? If one man says it does not mean a Negro, why does not another say it does not mean some other man? If that Declaration is not...true, let us tear it out! [Cries of '"no, no!"] Let us stick to it then, let us stand firmly by it then."
My daughter is a US History and Poli Sci major. She has traveled the United States visiting schools along the way. History is taught with dramatic 'bias' everywhere, or so she has seen in her travels. Besides, blaming one person for actions that involved a PARTY of people demonstrates ignorance of the highest degree, in my opinion. I would recommend "Lies My Teacher Told Me" by James W. Loewen. You may find yourself more upset with your state legislature than any president.
